In the Regents Spotlight

VFW Citizenship & Education Teacher of the Year

Regents Academy’s own fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Lori Cunyus, was awarded the K-5 Citizenship and Education Teacher of the Year Award for our local VFW Post 3893. She received a plaque and a check with her award. She also advanced to the district level and was awarded a plaque and a check for Teacher of the Year for District 19.

We are very proud of Mrs. Cunyus and even more thankful for her involvement with our students and Regents family.

History & Geography Bees
For several years now, January has been "bee month" at Regents Academy. In addition to our participation in the Scripps National Spelling Bee (January 20), we will also participate in the National History Bee as well as the National Geography Bee. Here is some information on these two events.  The National History Bee is sponsored each year by the History Channel and is open to all students in grades 4-8. Our competition is planned for January 5th. The top five contestants will be invited to participate in an online qualifying exam later in January, and those who qualify will be invited to the regional competition in Houston in hopes of moving on to the national competition in Atlanta.  The National Geography Bee (sponsored by National Geographic) will first be held among classes in grades 4-8. Then the top two winners from each grade level will square off in the school competition on January 27th. Prizes will be awarded for the top competitors, and our champion will enter a state competition later in the year.  Bee month will be upon us when we return from Christmas break. We hope many 4th-8th grade students will participate.

Spelling Bee for 1st-8th Grade Students
Our OFFICIAL Spelling Bee is on Friday, January 20th.  It’s not too late to sign up and participate in the official bee! If you didn’t participate in the practice bees in November, you may still participate in the Official bee! Individual and team sign-up sheets are posted in the hall. Teachers are in charge of determining who their top two individual student representatives will be as well as the team that will represent their class/grade at the Lufkin bee on Saturday, Jan. 28th. Some grades may choose to participate in the team bee school competition on Friday, Jan. 20th, but this will be up to each teacher. Please encourage your student/s to sign up. They can sign up for individual AND team competitions, but if their team wins the school bee and they also win the individual bee, they will be automatically listed as our school winner with The Houston Chronicle and will compete in the individual bee competition in Lufkin on Saturday, Jan. 28th.
